Save the date cards are typically sent out a year to 6 months before your wedding. Now you may be asking is that true in every case and the answer is “no.” Why? Sometimes a bride only has 5 months to plan her wedding so, that would mean she couldn’t have already sent the save the date cards out. It is always good to send them out as soon as possible once you have decided on a date though, so that your attendees can put it on their calendars. Especially, if your wedding is happening during the summer (kids are out of school) and/or around holidays. Try to give your guests as much as advance notice as possible. If some of your guests are from out-of-town they definitely need that advance notice to be able to request time off from work and get their travel arrangements made. If your planning a destination wedding and you’re sending save the date cards out please make sure you provide the necessary travel information with dates and times so, that the guests aren’t feeling like a fish out of water if they are planning on attending. Also, you don’t have to send out save the date cards but it definitely is nice to let your guests know well in advance when your nuptials will be.

Color Your Wedding

So you’ve figured out your personality type and have an idea of the style you want to incorporate into your special day… now let’s take a look at the role of color. One of the first questions brides get asked is “so what are your wedding colors”? People are curious and want to visualize what color that tulle is going to be (go ahead and extract all tulle from your decorating arsenal right now)! First, when deciding on colors you may want to consider the season you are marrying in and what flowers will be available. Second, from a budget perspective you may want to take advantage of great sales from the holidays near your wedding, for example a February wedding using the color red could benefit not only from after Valentine’s Day discounts, but also the many Christmas items that are in clearance mode. Third, color should be a reflection of your personality. Generally colors are classified in two categories, warm and cool, even the makeup we wear (or don’t wear) is an indication of the direction of our color palette. Color is important as long as it complements your design elements, think of it more as an accessory. Color adds a personal touch to the décor, the table runners could have been any color, but the fact that you chose “orange” makes a statement that you intend for this reception to be a celebration, to be full of life, to be a bold reflection of the life and joy you both share. Having an autumn wedding? There are many flowers that have come into full blossom this time of year. If you live in the West then expect to see Chrysanthemum, Gerber daisy, hydrangea, pomegranate, rose and rose hip, East-amaryllis, hydrangea, ornamental berries, rose, sunflower, South-bittersweet, hydrangea, ornamental berries, rose, sassafras and Midwest-autumn foliage, crab apple, dahlia, ornamental berries, rose hip and rose. As you can see, many regions overlap with the variety of flowers they offer which means a cheaper price tag for you because they are more readily available. Although these flowers may be the least expensive during fall, it does not mean you must incorporate them into your wedding plans. It’s just another way to cut costs for your big day. These days you can get any flowers you want, any time of year, but keep in mind, those exotic flowers you want in the middle of winter might just tip the budget scale!

Decor and design is the way to incorporate “you” into your wedding, from a simple candlelit ceremony to an all-out disco ball extravaganza, the choices are endless and sometimes the responsibility can cause option fatigue. As they say some people are squares and others are rounds, speaking in terms of design taste of course. What are the shapes and designs that you are naturally drawn to? Just look at your closet, is it filled with streamlined suits, basic jeans and tshirts, free-flowing tops and skirts? You can easily find your personality in your clothes. Your personality is reflected in your wardrobe and in your decor and design tastes. You may be familiar with various personality tests one of which categorizes personalities through 4 animals, the Lion, the Beaver, the Otter, the Golden Retriever. In brief, the Lion is the powerful take-charge leader, the Beaver is the organized analyst, the Otter is the outgoing friend, and the Golden Retriever is the easy-going diplomat, so which one do you most identify with? This is a clue to your design style, the goal then is to keep your design seamless throughout your wedding and not get too many themes competing for attention and ultimately making no statement at all except confusion! So get to know “you” and set the stage for a fabulously designed wedding that is sure to be eye candy!

What is that famous saying, “Preparation time is NEVER wasted time.” In the event business it is all about the preparation and timing to insure a happy ending. Whether your event is 2 months from now or a year from now it is never to early to start planning. It is always good to have pen, paper and a camera with you when you are planning to capture your ideas and thoughts as you go throughout the day. Sometimes the best ideas come when you are not thinking about your event but just going through everyday life. Once you have gathered your thoughts and ideas you will be able to see things that you want to weed out and other things that you definitely want to see come to pass. If you fail to plan you plan to fail. So, let’s get planning!
